Diversity in America – Essay Example
American culture began to form before the US became a country. It was influenced by British culture in its earliest form and inherited the language, legal system and other cultural aspects. USA was also strongly influenced by other European countries such as Ireland, Germany, Poland, Italy, as most of the immigrants came from there. The large number of ethnic (national) groups in the country can be explained by the historical events that took place in this relatively young country. For centuries, immigrants came to the U.S. from England, Spain, Germany, Russia, Ireland, Sweden, China, Italy and many other countries. That is why it is so easy to meet people of almost any nationality there. The largest ethnic groups in the US nowadays are the descendants of Germans, African Americans, the Irish, British and Mexicans. Thus, America is truly a land of multiculturalism, plural races and ethnicities.
Tanking about diverse population in US it is essential to mention the concept of “the melting pot”. This metaphor has been used to express and describe the multi-ethnicity of US. According to it the country is one large melting pot, and people who enter this country go through the process of assimilation with American belief system and culture. However, their nationalities bring something unique, something that stays and blends with American culture. Therefore, American culture is truly a mixture of other cultures.
Diversity in US is represented on other levels as well. For example, due to its geographical position, the climate differs from state to state. Most of the continental United States lies in the temperate zone; southern Florida and Hawaii are in the tropics; the climate in Alaska is subarctic and arctic.
This country has been and still remains the desirable place to live for a lot of people, who struggle to find peace or lead a happy life in their home countries. There is no other place on Earth that has such a marvelous cultural mix with wisdom and a background of lots of diverse nationalities. Obviously, diversity is what makes this country so remarkable in the first place.
